1983 Virago XV920 having issues starting

trpa0701
I just bought a 1983 Virago xv920 and it's having some issues starting... when I push the button to start it, it makes a sound like a baseball card in bike spokes. Sometimes it catches right away and other times, I have to try six or seven times before it catches and the bike starts up. Once it starts, it seems to run perfect. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am afraid that is about normal. The early Virago's used a Bendix starter design. In that the starter is already turning when it engages the flywheel. That's the sound you hear. There are shims that may help for a while, but there isn't anything that will fix it short of changing the starter system out to the new design. On the 920, that is possible as the case is machined for it. I have the procedure and parts list if you want it. The change is a major project IMHO, and should not be attempted by the faint of heart, Ha! On my 920, I hit the starter button in short bursts, if it kicks in properly the bike will start, if not I just let go of the starter button and try again and put up with the noise..........

Well, that's a terrible design. What would you recommend? How short of bursts should I try? And how long should I wait between tries? It eventually starts, it's just very annoying. If I wanted to fix it, what would you recommend? Shims or complete switch? Could I get the parts and procedure just to glance over and see if I want to try it? Thanks so much by the way!

Re: 1983 Virago XV920 having issues starting

Send me your private email address and I will send you a copy of the procedure and parts list. My recommendation is to leave it alone until the starter quits completely, then make  the change. I just hit the button and if it grinds, I let go and try again. There is no need to wait any specific time, maybe a second or two. It is annoying, but that is the way it was manufactured and as the bikes get older the gears begin to wear and it gets worse. The #2 idler gear is the one that takes the most punishment. Sometimes you can replace it and add a shim kit and it will be better for a while.

Hey, I don't think I ever sent you my email. It's trpa0701@stcloudstate.edu

Also, I was looking into Dr. Virago Pete's powerclip and shims seen here:

http://www.drviragopete.com/powerclip8.php

and I was also looking on ebay at new starters seen here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Starter-XV700-Virago-750-920-RoadPack-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ140445143142QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I guess what I'm wondering is which of these is applicable and would be easier for me to do? Thanks again by the way!

Re: 1983 Virago XV920 having issues starting

I have never heard of Dr. Virago Pete, but that doesn't mean much. There are a number of companies who produce the clips and shims that "Claim" to fix the early Virago starter problem. None of them do! All or most of them will make things better for a while but eventually you will be back to the same problem again. The best bet is a new starter along with a new #2 idler gear. If your starter just grinds but finally kicks in and starts, then the clips might help, if it just spins and never kicks in, then you have a clutch problem and the shim kit won't help. Now that I have your email, I will send the parts list for the upgrade to the later model starter.

unfortunately, that is how that silly design was...  There are some fixed, check out the Virago Tech forum..  There are some very knowledgeable guys that can give you some handles on that.  I am taking mine to a shop in Los Angeles, CA that has fixed that problem.  I have been riding my XV920MK for about three months and have put 6,000 miles on it and have endured that same embarrassing problem.  I hope to have it fixed next week sometimes.  Good luck with that.  I love my bike, and its rides great.P1060299.JPG

The fix for the Virago was extremely easy and the Horseshoe ("Powerclip") was the fix that made the difference. I would recommend buying the horseshoe clip and fixing it yourself if you still can. It completely fixed my bike. Now, my bike is sputtering though because I need to clean the carbs I think... lame :(

well, I finally went all the way and modified my '83 920 to have the starter guts of a 1984 XV1000.  I replaced the stator cover and added the necessary internal gears and external electronics.  The result is a bike that starts each and every time like a brand new bike.  I tried both of the "clip" solutions and niether one of them really worked.  I am replacing the clutch and a bad oil seal on the "new" stator cover.  I should be up and running this weekend!

I also put on the KJS single Carb solution on it.  Here is a pic of that

Hello Yamaha owner.  Yes I have the dreaded starter problem on my 82-920.  The starter engages allright, but will not dis-ingage immediatly after engine fires.  About two or three seconds.  Heat seems to have an effect on this, for the worse.  Somehow, the gear won't go out of engagement.  I welded the ring gear (spot) to backing plate and this eliminated the non working shims. My starter does not look like a bendix starter though.  Bike is stock, low mileage and never opened up.  Please e-mail me your fix.  My e-mail is dino4x4@hotmail.com.  Thanks so much.  Just don't like the "Box of rocks" sound, as I know what this does to gear teeth and flywheel teeth.  I not bothered by the degree of complexity you mentioned in your fix.  Thanks much and happy riding.
