Has anyone noticed that if you put the XV1100 on the side stand whilst idling the oil light will come on after a while? If its on the centre stand this doesn't happen. Would anyone have an explanation for this and is this normal for the 1996 ...... cheers BJ
First and foremost, it has to be understood that this RED Indicator OIL LIGHT is an oil level indicator and not, repeat, not an oil pressure indicator light.
To stop this light from annoying you, just remove the bulb. If you, periodically check you oil via the oil sight gauge (which should be done often). Then there is no real need for this RED Oil Level Light and its annoying ON/OFF Flicker / Flash.
The oil level sensor is on the right side of the bike toward the front on the engine. With the bike on the side stand the oil gravitates to the left side of the engine allowing the oil sensor to drain and that crazy light comes on. Up hill and/or hard accelerations will do the same. If you want to see where the sensor is exactly. Take a mirror and place it under your engine near the brake pedal and you will see where it is with a wire coming from it. The mirror works best, unless you are good at standing on you head!
appreciate your expertise amigo ..... I can now sleep easy that my basket case project will not be a lost cause. The foundations are still there hiding beneath all the rust, grime and neglect. Trouble is the missus is sayin I'm spending more time with the bike now than with her ....... lol
